Carinthia Defence 1 Sleeping Bag

The Defence 1 is a military mummy sleeping bag designed for operators and professionals who need to keep size and weight under control without sacrificing thermal performance in typical field conditions. Available in two sizes: for heights up to 185 cm (weight 1050 g) and for heights up to 200 cm (weight 1200 g).

The most significant construction feature is the outer shell in Shellproof — 100% polyamide microfibre — which sits freely over the inner Shelltrans layer without being stitched to it. This separation creates an additional air layer that acts as passive insulation and, more importantly, eliminates cold spots at seams: the join points do not form thermal bridges. The result is a consistent heat reserve during bivouacs in wet conditions or with significant overnight temperature drops, across a temperature range of +3 °C to -12 °C.

The central trade-off of the Defence 1 is its mummy design with a two-way 150 cm zip positioned along the centreline. The zip does not snag the fabric and allows a quick exit; opening only the lower section provides foot ventilation without opening the entire bag — useful on milder nights. The shape tapers progressively from the shoulders downward, with a trapezoidal footbox: better thermal containment than a rectangular cut, but less lateral freedom of movement. Sleepers who keep their knees wide or tend to roll over frequently may find this geometry restrictive; for those who sleep on their back it is an efficient design. The GLT hollow fibre insulation with thermoreflective coating rounds out the system without adding bulk, allowing compressed packing in the included compression sack.
