Helikon-Tex Trooper MK2 StormStretch Jacket

The Trooper MK2 is the second generation of Helikon-Tex's most popular softshell, built in StormStretch® stretch fabric for those who need a lightweight outer shell with unrestricted movement. The fit is slightly roomier than the first generation, making it suitable as an outer layer against light cold and moisture, or as a mid-shell over a thermal lining on winter outings.

StormStretch® combines structural stretch with abrasion resistance: it moves with the body without losing shape and provides a barrier against wind and light moisture through a DWR surface treatment. It is worth being clear that this is water repellency, not waterproofing: the Trooper MK2 handles splashes and light rain, but it is not a jacket for heavy downpours. In return, it breathes better than a waterproof membrane, which makes it well suited to dynamic use where body temperature rises quickly.

The centre zip is a two-way YKK, a reliable closure that lets you open the jacket from the bottom during high-output movement without taking it off. The front hand pockets are positioned on the front panel so they remain accessible even when wearing a pack with a substantial hip belt, and they are wide enough to fit gloved hands; inside, secondary compartments help organise small accessories. The shoulder pockets add a Velcro-faced panel for patches and a quick-stash option on top of that. The hood stows in the collar and adjusts via a rear Velcro tab and elastic drawcords; the cuffs close with Velcro at the wrist, and the hem is adjustable with an elastic drawcord. Underarm mesh venting dumps heat during high-effort phases without having to open the main zip. At this level of protection and packability, the trade-off is clear: no waterproof membrane, and thermal insulation depends on what you wear underneath — which is exactly what a versatile softshell is designed to be.
