LPVO Scopes

Low-power variable optics, from 1-4x to 1-10x: a single instrument for close-range engagement and medium distance.

True 1x is the point

An LPVO makes sense only if it behaves like a red dot sight at 1x — meaning the magnification is genuinely unity. When it is, you shoot with both eyes open and the brain merges the two images effortlessly. When it is not — even slightly — binocular vision breaks down and the advantage over a red dot disappears.

First or second focal plane

On the first focal plane, the reticle scales with magnification: the subtensions retain their angular value at any zoom setting, so measurements and corrections remain valid at all times. The downside is that at 1x the reticle becomes small and difficult to see, which is why FFP models almost always feature an illuminated centre dot.

On the second focal plane, the reticle stays the same apparent size: easier to read at 1x, but the subtensions are only accurate at the calibration magnification, usually the maximum.

Also consider eye relief and weight: an LPVO with its mount weighs as much as a red dot plus a magnifier, and mounts on the same rail.
