Why they matter more than they seem
An optic is the most expensive and most delicate component of the system, and the lens is its most exposed part. A snap-on lens cap costs a few euros and prevents the scratch that permanently degrades the image.
The sunshade serves a dual purpose: it reduces reflections entering the objective that lower contrast, and it conceals the lens reflection from the outside. On an optic mounted in a fixed position, it is the simplest way to improve the image without changing the glass.
The honeycomb protectors — killflash — eliminate the reflection almost entirely, at the cost of a loss of brightness that becomes noticeable during dawn and dusk hours.
On cleaning: use dedicated microfibre cloths and never your shirt. The anti-reflection coating is a thin layer and scratches on it cannot be repaired.
